Well, you really can't call it a 'preview', can you? I mean, the issue has already been out a week or so, and the fan reaction has been so polarized that I don't know if Marvel would ever use me again. Or maybe - and here's what I hope would happen - they'll just say, "Yeah? Really? You don't like Canete's work? Really DON'T like it, huh? Yeah... well, we really LOVE him. And we're going to let him do 13 more issues back to back to back until YOU love him."
Awww... don't be upset. I adore you, puzzling and militant Spidey fans - all of you! I swear it!
And I can't tell whether or not the love/hate split for #611 goes right down the middle, but I wonder if there's any way I can cajole Marvel's editorial offices to just alienate the remaining 50% by letting me do just that - 13 issues back to back.
Let's ask, shall we?
In the mean time, here's 11 pages of the issue in black and white for your viewing pleasure. For the full effect (the AWESOME and HILARIOUS plot by JOE KELLY, word balloons, colors, etc.) *and* in order to support my plight in making every Spiderman fan nervous for a year, please pick up the issue out on your local comic book stores' stands now. Then do me a huge ol' favor and write an e-mail to Marvel's Stephen Wacker telling him how you're part of the progressive/forward thinking 50% and how ecstatic you'd be if I could go on a year-long tear regarding the Sinister Six.
And to those who have already bought the issue, thank you SO MUCH for your patronage and for all the kind, supportive, and congratulatory e-mails. I am genuinely appreciative and I owe you folks a ton.
Have a great week.
PS - Are there really people boycotting the Spiderman books because of some event that's happened, like Marvel did a whole rewind on Spiderman's history or Aunt May is now a super-spy? Really?! A boycott?! Wow, you guys are hard core.

I love the pages! I'm buying this. Or asking "Santa" for it. That sounds like a good plan.
Either way, I'm going to get it this issue that's full of amazing! :D
I'll buy it and I'll write to Stephen Wacker that you have absolute stay on Spidey...I promise! ;)
See you soon!
...and congratulations!♥
DUDE!!!! The only reason I bought this issue is of you!!! ROCKIN' art!!! Hope you'll continue to do more issues!!! Thanks!
You're a true hero. Fantastic!
As always, great work. I bought two issues.
Message to editors sent. Loved this issue so much. If anyone else's interested:

You're not a cookie-cutter super-hero artist, man. Spidey has a lot of energy and motion behind his poses, and I think your style reflects that quite well.
Yeah, they're still boycotting the book because of the "one More Day" story that Joe Quesada drew because he got rid of Peter and MJ's marriage.
It's sad that they're boycotting it because the issues I've read of it (I tend to pick up issues based on who's drawing it, like the Bachalo issues) have been some of the more fun Spider-Man books that I've read in a long time.
wow, Eric, this is great! I like the cameras, the angles you use in each panel. this is one of the best spiderman I saw, without a dudas.bye...

Ignore tha haters!
OMG, those pages, omg.
Keep doing what yer doing good sir.

Dude. I thought the art was INCREDIBLE. Even moreso I thought the style you threw into this was perfect for the Spidey/Deadpool issue. I would love to see more of your work on future issues. I'll be picking up ASM either way, but I'll be rushing to my comic shop 20x faster if its an issue drawn by you. Great stuff man. GREAT stuff.
I didn't even know this was happening.
Always love when you put the ears on Spidey. It's so weird when he doesn't have ears.
I think Marvel is lulling over bringing Kraven back. I hope you get to draw that so you make people even more angry.
BELLISSIME!
Ciao Eric!
I picked it up (just started reading comics again after 2 years) and i effin loved it. people are gonna hate regardless (usually non-talented people who wish they were in your shoes). I hope you become a mainstay @ Marvel. With people like Maleeve, skottie amd Leinel, you fit right in. keep it ill
eric,
so glad you included the
spidey double page (pgs. 8 & 9) in this preview.
that is THE AWESOME! :)
I've been boycotting most Marvel books in general for some time. Got sick of all the super duper giant happenings that affect the entire universe, like the Skrull thing... and really sick of all the reboots. Wont stop me from picking up any book that has Canete in it, though! Good luck getting your 13 issues. If you do, I'll make mine Marvel again.
Amazing Work for Amazing Spider-Man!! As soon as i finish work ill go get my copy!! I wasn't buying Spider-man since a Brand New Day, but If Marvel gives you more issues to do then i'm back! :)
Great work Eric, the art looks beyond cool
Mr Canete: I'm currently living in United Estates and I swear God I'm gonna order and buy your issues and absolutely everything you publish. Your work is amazing and refreshing. I just love it. Keep the good work.
I DIDN'T KNOW THIS CAME OUT! i haven't been to the shop because i'm broke and there hasn't been anything to get me down there in a while, but this... this is it. I got to count up my pennies, BECAUSE PENNIES ARE STILL MONEY! and buy one. and how could people NOT like this? i guess some people like to sit in there moms basement and complain about everything because they hate the world since they're in their moms basement.
the pages look ABSOLUTELY filled with HIGH KINETIC energy!!
the double spreads are to kill for , esp in the spidy one the motion accelerates the drama, love the compositions , FANTASTIC my friend!
This is AWESOME! The fluidity in your lines always amaze me. I'm gonna go draw a comic now.
Hey dude,
Just found your blog the other day, love it man. As for the Spidey pages...I honestly cringe at what they've done to the wall crawler and have no interest in ever buying or reading a Spider-Man comic again...until I saw your pages.
AMAZING WORK!
Thanks for the post and for sharing.
...ira owens
DAMN Eric!!! Stunning!!! I pullin for you man, give me a reason to get off my but and get back to the comic store!
I loved the issue man! I'm composing my e-mail to steve wacker as we speak.
Great job, congratulations
Due to International Delay I don't have my copy yet...but I will.
These pages are flat out brilliant!
Don't sweat the people that don't dig your stuff...all you need to do is see what they _do_ like and there you have the barometer for their knowledge of anything, let alone "art".
I've gone off superheroes, and haven't bought a Spidey book in years. But I bought Iron Man: ETM, and I will definitely buy your Spidey run.
I bought two copies!!
The pages look awesome in black and white, thanks for sharing them.
Looking forward to more comics from you!
Eric,
I am not a Spidey fan, but I really do appreciate what you did with this universe and how you design each of these characters.
Keep the level up!
Well, I don't care what anybody says-- I think you're a goddamn genius. These pages are like a master class on the marriage of storytelling, dynamism, and style.
Man, that's amazing. Love your perspectives and the control of the human body!
Saw the Bleeding Cool article, which led me here.
Eric, when I first read ASM #611, your art freaked me out in the same way Sienkiewicz's art did when I first read Stray Toasters. And I mean that in a good way. Your art is not a passive experience - it's a challenge in the way that true art SHOULD be.
The comics industry doesn't need more cookie cutter imitators or clones, but it does need innovative storytellers and you definitely fall in the latter category. Props to Wacker for being forward-thinking enough to utilize your considerable talents. Here's to many more gigs like ASM #611.
Yours is the only non-Marcos Martin issue of ASM I've purchased. I would definitely be there for everyone of your 13 issue run if Marvel did do that.
Absolutely loved it.
The issue was great! the story was hilarious. The way you distort and stretch your spidey poses was perfect - you were made for drawing spidey. My only problem was the coloring - it seems to confuse the art and not clarify it - perhaps "flatter" coloring would work better with your line work.
Eric,
I've been a comic reader since the 80's, when I was 10 or so. I buy a lot of books, but for whatever reason, I've never purchased a Spidey issue. I bought yours, though. I hope Marvel does ignore the haters and give you more work, be it on Spidey or another title. Beautiful work, sir.
didin't realize there was such a shitstorm around this..
I bought the issue COS you drew it..
and the word verification was "rabbl", how apropos ;-)
because of you, i'm going to pick this issue of spiderman up.
peace out
Eric, I picked this one up, just cuz it had your art. I was sad to see you leave End league, but to graduate to spidey? Well done sir! Get Wacker to give you maoire...I demand it!
Were you to be the regular artist, I'd actually subscribe to ASM. Looks awesome
Hey Eric,
Been a long time fan of your artwork since I think Mr. Majestic and visit your blog here every now and then.
I didn't know you were drawing Amazing Spidey until Erik Larsen tweeted the fact and I had to pick up a copy myself (and with one of my all time favourite writers, Joe Kelly, even cooler; a must buy for me).
Put me on the side of LOVE IT, MORE CANETE SPIDEY PLEASE! :)
Anyway,keep up the great work!!
Your pages work a lot BETTER without the colors!
The color guy should take easy because yours layouts are already too confusing.
But i have hope that you will find the perfect tone.
Hughs.
ac!
dope.
if every Marvel book had an artist that draws with this kind of passion, we'd all be happier!
darn..how can i miss this..
definitely a must buy!
and i want Eric Canete to stay for another 13 issues!
love it man!
great work man!
The problem for people who read ASM was that the stylle changed too rapidly and it was completely different from any other artist in recent issues.
I still like it thoguh i believe it was the best art to fit kelly´s story. i live in peru and if I was older than 16 years old and lived in USA i would definitely buy one of those pages. Good luck and your art is truly good.
I got here because of bleeding cool, nice blog.
Well I prefer to look at it as not a boycott, but not buying a book with a story I can't stand. It's the only real protest a consumer can really have when you think about it.
But I can see myself buying a couple issues with your art.
hehehe... its the only reason I bought Iron man.
I was thrilled to see your name on the cover! I really enjoyed the issue, too. I don't know why people want "traditional super-hero art" all the time. Artists like you, Paolo Rivera, and Mitch Breitweiser make things interesting to look at.
Dude, I'd start buying Amazing Spiderman if you were the regular artist. I haven't touched that series in 10 years.
I went to go pick this up and my LCS was *sold out. Sigh.
*I guess that's a good thing.
I love the book. I haven't bought a comic off the rack in YEARS and your artwork inspired me to do just that. It looks fantastic.
I've been thinking you need to be on Spidey since I first saw your pencils. And I was right. Great issue, great storytelling from both you and Kelly, exciting and energetic art work--I'd buy Spidey on a regular basis with you on pencils!
The only reason why I'm buying this issue is for your art. It's fucking fantastic.
Hello! I'm Andres, the Amazing Spiderman 611's colorist! It was an honor for me color your work!
I wish you have a beautiful Year ending and a perfect New Year!
And I hope we'll soon work again together!
Best
Andres
